Curtis Mann‘s work has seemingly exploded in the art world since his graduation from Columbia’s Photography MFA Program this past Spring. Looking at his images on the web doesn’t make too much sense, considering his work is so much about surface. He manipulates his imagery with chemicals such as bleach, subsequently creating a unique piece every time. I’m not honestly too, too crazy about his work, although I appreciate something new within the field of contemporary photography (and contemporary photography working with the vernacular). This interview is a pretty good read.
His older work, which you have to dig around a little on the interwebs to find, has a nice playful/raw tension that I’m definitely feeling:

Dude, keep these coming, even if nobody comments. It’s all amazing work and has been influential to read. Crazy to think that all of it is coming out of just Chi-town. So multiply that by like… 300 bigger towns/cities in the U.S.? Some good work out there…

The way the chemicals erase physical layers as well as the image is very interesting. I always find it compelling when photographers make the medium more 3dimentional and physical.
