Being a sociologist makes being a photographer a little easier. Most photographers are romantic (in that fake scientist sort of way) “sociologists,” so when you’re the real deal, there can be an unrivaled clarity in your work. David Schalliol‘s photographs are remarkably clear and straight-forward. As a sociologist, “His personal research activities span the sociology of education, urban sociology, social stratification, theory and culture, and visual sociology.” And so what better beast to take on but gentrification.

From his statement:
Initially, viewers may see the buildings in this set as identical, but the novel, consistent context shows these buildings as symbols of communities in flux. Whether a building is a pioneer or a survivor, built by gentrification or decayed by divestment, these buildings and their environs demonstrate how investment cycles affect the visible differences and similarities in our built environment, urban neighborhoods and community relationships.

David is a really smart man, and a fellow artist in Catherine Edelman Gallery’s The Chicago Project. You can see some of his photos on view at The Chicago Diner, but I’m excited to see them in a gallery soon.
